Michigan’s Great Lakes have become a focal point in the state’s gubernatorial race, with Republican candidate John James facing scrutiny over his environmental voting record. James, who has been a U.S. Representative since 2023, has publicly committed to safeguarding the lakes, yet his legislative actions have raised questions about his dedication to this cause.
The Great Lakes, crucial for Michigan’s drinking water and a hub for recreation and tourism, have faced potential threats from reduced environmental regulations and the possibility of expanded oil drilling under the Trump administration. Despite these concerns, James has expressed opposition to drilling and water diversion, telling Bridge Michigan in May that he opposes such measures. He echoed similar sentiments in 2020, disagreeing with any reduction in federal funding for the lakes as proposed by then-President Trump, according to Politico.
However, James’s voting record tells a different story. In 2023, he voted against an amendment to a bipartisan energy bill that aimed to prohibit oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes. The International Joint Commission had earlier warned that an oil spill in the region would be disastrous, affecting nearly 40 million people who rely on the lakes for fresh water, as noted in their 2018 report.
Further controversy arose when James supported the PERMIT Act, legislation intended to revise the Clean Water Act, potentially affecting pollution levels in the Great Lakes. Environmental groups have argued that this could compromise the cleanliness of Detroit’s drinking water, leading to increased sanitation costs and higher water bills, as highlighted by environmental advocates.
Community advocate Tiana Starks voiced concerns to Planet Detroit, stating, “Water affordability is already a crisis for Detroiters,” with approximately 60,000 households struggling to pay their water bills. She warned that additional costs could exacerbate the situation.
James also missed a significant House vote in March 2026, which aimed to extend federal funding for Great Lakes restoration efforts, further fueling criticism from his opponents.
His Democratic challenger, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, has emphasized the importance of protecting the Great Lakes on her campaign platform. Her website underscores the reliance of 15 million people on the lakes for drinking water and highlights the importance of safeguarding Michigan’s natural resources amidst rapid climate change.
