Mary Sheffield Announces Historic Bid for Detroit Mayoralty

In a bold move towards potentially making history, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield has announced her candidacy for mayor, aiming to become the first woman to hold the position in the city.

With 11 years of experience on the City Council under her belt, Sheffield and her supporters emphasize her readiness to transition into the mayoral role smoothly. Her record includes championing eviction defense and establishing right-to-legal-counsel initiatives, demonstrating her commitment to advocacy and reform.

Addressing a lively crowd at a Detroit union hall, Sheffield declared, “Will you join me in making history? Will you join me in building on the success that we’ve all worked for? Will you join me and remind the world that Detroit is the greatest city on Earth?” Her call to action resonated with supporters eager to see her vision for the city realized.

Reflecting on Detroit’s journey over the past decade, Sheffield noted the significant progress since the city emerged from municipal bankruptcy and regained autonomy from a state-appointed emergency manager. She emphasized the need for continued growth and equitable prosperity, aiming to extend the benefits seen in select areas to encompass all Detroit residents.

“Together, Detroit, we can grow our population, rebuild our neighborhoods so that people not only want to work and play, but also live and raise their families here,” she asserted, outlining her vision for Detroit’s future.

The race to succeed current Mayor Mike Duggan, who is stepping down to pursue a gubernatorial bid, is expected to be competitive. Sheffield joins a growing list of candidates, with four other individuals already forming committees to explore their own mayoral campaigns.
