Michael J. Behm to Lead Board of Regents; Meyers Named Vice Chair

Regent Michael J. Behm will take over as chair of the Board of Regents on July 1, succeeding Mark Bernstein. Regent Carl Meyers will step into the role of vice chair. These appointments were confirmed during the board meeting on June 25, with both officials set to serve until June 30, 2027.

Michael Behm, currently the vice chair, first joined the Board of Regents in 2014 and was reelected in 2022, with his term ending on Jan. 1, 2031. Carl Meyers, elected in 2024, will serve until Jan. 1, 2033. Behm hails from Grand Blanc and is affiliated with the Democratic Party, while Meyers, a Republican, is from Dearborn.

The Regents’ Bylaws dictate that the chair and vice chair positions are determined by seniority, with a regent serving as vice chair before automatically moving to the chair position the next year. The chair collaborates with the vice chair, president, and board secretary to determine major board discussion topics, oversees committee agenda planning, and presides over executive sessions without the president. The chair also communicates essential information to other regents and appoints committee chairs and members. If the chair cannot fulfill their duties, the vice chair steps in.
