In a significant turn of events at the Michigan state Capitol, a once-barred Republican elector found himself celebrating on the Senate floor. Hank Choate, a 74-year-old farmer from Cement City, was among the GOP members rejoicing as he cast a 2024 Electoral College vote for President-elect Donald Trump.
Reflecting on the occasion, Choate expressed his emotions saying, “I don’t know if I can really put it into words.” His joy was evident as he performed a celebratory dance, a stark contrast to four years ago when Capitol police had denied him and others entry to the building. Watch the video here.

Choate’s optimism was shared by others, including former GOP party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, who noted the emotional weight of the day. “It is very emotional, I didn’t expect it to be,” she remarked, recalling her attire from the day they were previously barred from the Capitol.

Looking back to 2020, Choate and several others were involved in an attempt to deliver a certificate falsely declaring Trump’s victory in Michigan. This led to felony charges against them, amidst accusations of election forgery. Six of the original 16 electors have been nominated again for 2024, now legitimized by Trump’s electoral win.
What’s happening with the criminal case?
All accused in the 2020 forgery case have pleaded not guilty. Legal representatives argue that their clients were misled by Trump campaign attorneys into believing the certificates would be used only if the election results were overturned. The certificates, however, were sent to the National Archives, part of what prosecutors describe as a broader plan to challenge the 2020 election outcomes.
A preliminary examination in the case has concluded, with defense attorneys submitting final briefs before a judge determines if the case will proceed to trial. Choate remains optimistic, stating that he believes a jury will find them innocent if the case advances that far.
