Scapa shared his journey from a “humble upbringing” as a descendant of Holocaust survivors to becoming a successful entrepreneur. His parents, who spoke multiple languages but struggled with English, instilled a strong work ethic in him. Scapa attended Columbia University and worked at Ford Motor Company before completing his MBA at UM-Dearborn. In 1985, he founded Altair with $1500 and recently sold it for $11 billion. Addressing undergraduates, he emphasized goal setting, vision development, and embracing diversity. “Life is short and much more interesting if you are learning from people who come from different places physically and intellectually,” he stated.
Khanafer, a Bachelor of Science graduate in behavioral and biological sciences, discussed overcoming setbacks. She shared a story about her father in Lebanon, who lost a cherished coin, teaching her that disappointment shouldn’t define one’s journey.
