Steve Frisbie Secures Victory in Michigan’s 44th House District

In a closely watched race, Republican Steve Frisbie has emerged as the winner for Michigan’s 44th state House District, located in Calhoun County. Following the certification of a recount by the county’s board of canvassers, Frisbie’s margin of victory increased from 61 to 79 votes.

After the November 5 election, initial unofficial results indicated a larger lead for Frisbie. This discrepancy was attributed to a tabulation error that resulted in thousands of mail-in ballots being counted but not reported. The error was later rectified, leading to the recount.

The recount was initiated at the request of Democratic incumbent Jim Haadsma, who faced off against Frisbie. According to Chris Trebilcock, Haadsma’s legal representative, the purpose of the recount went beyond seeking a victory.

“While we were disappointed with the results, the hand recount process was transparent, and it addressed many of the errors in the original canvas that we saw,” said Trebilcock. He added, “Ultimately, this recount was intended to ensure the process was done correctly and it will provide valuable guidance for future election administration.”

As of Wednesday afternoon, Haadsma had not made an official concession. Trebilcock noted, “That’s a personal decision for Jim on whether or not there’s a formal conceding of the election. However, from a legal perspective, the recount and the certification is the last step in the process.”
