Timothy G. Lynch, University of Michigan’s vice president and general counsel, has taken on the role of chair for the National Association of College and University Attorneys Board of Directors as of June 25, 2025. His leadership role underscores his influence in higher education law and opens a new chapter for NACUA’s strategic direction.

After being elected as chair-elect in May 2024, Lynch will fulfill his duties as chair until July 1, 2026. His prior experience on the NACUA board from 2016-19 enhances his qualifications for this position.

In 2023, Lynch received the First Decade Award for his innovative contributions to higher education law and NACUA’s mission. This accolade underscores his dedication to legal advancements in the academic sector.

The association is committed to improving legal support for colleges by educating attorneys and administrators on campus legal matters. It also emphasizes the continuing legal education of university counsel.

Since 2013, Lynch has been the vice president and general counsel at U-M. His academic contributions include his role as an adjunct professor at the Law School, where he teaches a seminar on internal investigations.

Lynch’s teaching experience extends to the University of Virginia Law School and Georgetown University Law Center. He frequently speaks at major conferences on higher education legal issues, organized by NACUA, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and more.

He chairs the general counsels steering committee for the Association of American Universities. Lynch’s educational background includes a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as editor-in-chief of the Georgetown Law Journal.
