Understanding Vehicle Safety: A Recent Study Highlights Key Insights
The latest findings from a vehicle safety organization shed light on the cars with the highest driver fatality rates, emphasizing the importance of vehicle choice in ensuring safety on the road. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) provides this crucial data, updated every three years, to guide potential car buyers.
Chuck Farmer, Vice President for Research at IIHS, emphasizes the necessity of avoiding extremes when selecting a vehicle. “Avoid the extremes,” he advises, noting that both very small and very large cars come with their own risks. Smaller cars generally offer less protection in collisions with larger vehicles, while larger vehicles can pose a threat to others on the road.
Farmer also points out the risks associated with sports and muscle cars, as they often appear on lists of vehicles involved in fatal accidents. “These cars that make you want to drive fast are risky to you and everybody else on the road,” Farmer explains. Such vehicles not only have high driver death rates but also frequently contribute to fatal accidents involving other drivers.
IIHS crash test ratings provide valuable insights into how well vehicles protect occupants in controlled environments, while real-world driver fatality reports reveal how various factors—such as driving behavior, road conditions, and other vehicles—affect safety outcomes. Farmer recommends consulting both resources when shopping for a car to ensure the selection of a safe vehicle.
According to the study, the Kia Rio minicar leads in driver deaths, with a rate of 170 per million annually. In contrast, six vehicles, including four luxury models, a large SUV, and a large pickup, reported zero driver deaths per million annually.
