Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s strategic alliance with President Donald Trump has once again come under scrutiny. Amidst growing criticisms, Whitmer’s efforts have secured key benefits such as a fighter mission for Selfridge Air National Guard Base, federal aid after weather-related disasters, and support for measures against invasive carp in the Great Lakes.
The latest challenge involves the Gordie Howe International Bridge, with Whitmer potentially needing to reconnect with Trump to ensure the project’s timely completion. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority recently announced a delay in the bridge’s opening, citing unresolved issues between the United States and Canada.
“Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues,” stated Chuck Andary, interim CEO of WDBA. “We appreciate the efforts of workers on both sides of the border to get the bridge to its current state of readiness.”
Whitmer expressed her hopes of getting the project back on track soon, despite not being surprised by the delay. She stated, “Michigan is ready to move forward and we’re hoping that we can do that in the next few days or weeks,” during a recent event in Dearborn.
In February, Trump voiced his discontent with the existing bridge agreement on Truth Social, demanding significant changes, including half ownership for the U.S. “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump posted.
The bridge, a massive project exceeding $4 billion, has been under construction since 2018, with Canada initially funding the construction to be later reimbursed through shared toll revenue. Ownership of the bridge is shared by Michigan and Canada.
Whitmer’s relationship with Trump has evolved from early criticism during her first term, particularly over the federal COVID response and comments on women and abortion, to a more cooperative dynamic following his re-election in 2024, where Michigan played a pivotal role.
Former Governor Rick Snyder, who played an instrumental role in initiating the Gordie Howe project, remains hopeful about the bridge’s future. He remarked on social media that the bridge will eventually open and serve as a crucial economic connection between Michigan and Canada. “The new bridge will stand for 125+ years so we should not let the current situation take away from what will be a brighter future due to the new crossing,” Snyder posted.
However, Snyder’s influence may be limited given his 2020 endorsement of Joe Biden over Trump, a move that marked a significant political departure.

Discussion topics around the dinner table
Slotkin’s aspirations: While Whitmer has not ruled out a future presidential bid, Michigan U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin remains a potential contender. Slotkin emphasized the need for fresh leadership and the potential for a swing-state Democrat from the Midwest to make a significant impact.
Budget updates: Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall has expressed openness to a stop-gap budget to bridge the state until the next gubernatorial election. However, Senate Democrats and various educational institutions oppose this approach, insisting on meeting the July 1 budget deadline.
Educational reforms: In response to a recent vote by Michigan House Republicans to expedite new reading curricula standards, Democrats argue that this move prioritizes politics over practical academic planning. Governor Whitmer, focusing on improving reading scores, has not yet commented on this legislative development.
