A fatal incident occurred at the Lewis and Clark County Courthouse when law enforcement responded to a reported threat. A woman with a handgun threatened multiple individuals, including a judge, resulting in a fatal police shooting. This incident took place Friday afternoon and is under investigation by the Montana Department of Criminal Justice.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., Helena police and Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the courthouse on 228 E. Broadway St. after receiving multiple 911 calls about the woman brandishing a firearm. Authorities stated the woman then moved east on Broadway Street, where law enforcement confronted her.
The woman ignored commands from officers and was subsequently shot. Efforts to save her were made but were not successful. The police closed a section of Broadway Street to secure the area.
The investigation is being led by the Montana Department of Criminal Justice, due to the involvement of both city police and county deputies. Authorities have not disclosed the woman’s motives, but more details are anticipated as the investigation continues.
