MetOx International to Build Superconducting Wire Facility in NC

Governor Cooper reveals MetOx Int'l's $193.7M facility in Chatham Co., creating 333 jobs, boosting clean tech, and enhancing NC's energy future.

MetOx International to Establish Major Production Facility in Chatham County, Creating New Jobs

In a significant development for North Carolina’s clean energy sector, MetOx International Inc., a leader in high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, has announced plans to invest $193.7 million in a new production facility in Chatham County. This move is expected to create 333 jobs, marking a substantial boost to the local economy.

Governor Roy Cooper highlighted the importance of this venture, stating, “Many cutting-edge technologies power the clean energy economy, and it’s great to see MetOx and its superconducting technology join us here in Chatham County. Reducing carbon emissions will keep us safer and healthier while putting more money in the pockets of North Carolina families, and we’re excited to bring more clean tech company jobs to our state.”

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, MetOx International is renowned for its advancements in HTS technology. The company is committed to fostering new energy solutions and reinforcing a robust manufacturing base for HTS in the United States. Collaborating with strategic investors, MetOx aims to drive innovation and fortify supply chains for vital superconducting applications across various industries.

Revolutionary Power Delivery Technology

HTS technology represents a breakthrough in power transmission, enabling the transfer of extremely high power at low voltage without generating heat or experiencing energy loss. This transformative technology is set to revolutionize key energy sectors including power transmission, distribution, and grid expansion. Furthermore, HTS meets the high-power demands of AI-driven applications and large-scale data centers while facilitating high-field magnet applications for next-generation wind turbines, clean aviation, and advanced defense systems.

The new facility in North Carolina’s Research Triangle region will focus on manufacturing MetOx’s Xeus™ HTS wire, capable of making transmission cables up to ten times more efficient than traditional copper cables.

According to Bud Vos, CEO of MetOx, “Establishing our new large-scale manufacturing facility in Chatham County is a pivotal step toward securing a reliable, domestic supply of HTS wire for the development of critical infrastructure in the United States. This facility will not only deliver transformative energy technologies that strengthen our grid and reduce carbon emissions but also create high-paying manufacturing jobs in a community eager to lead in innovation. We are proud to partner with North Carolina to drive forward a resilient energy future built on cutting-edge science and strong local collaboration.”

Economic Impact and Workforce Development

With an average salary of $75,132, the new jobs in Chatham County are expected to contribute over $25 million in annual payroll growth, significantly exceeding the county’s current average wage of $48,413. The project will be supported by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), which could reimburse MetOx up to $3,184,500 over 12 years, contingent upon the company’s performance in job creation and investment targets.

Economists estimate that the project will bolster the state’s economy by $987.8 million during the grant’s term, generating a 75% return on public investment. Additionally, the JDIG agreement may allocate up to $1,061,500 into a fund aimed at attracting businesses to rural communities in the state.

North Carolina Commerce Secretary Machelle Baker Sanders emphasized the state’s advantages, stating, “Innovative companies are naturally attracted to the top-tier research and educational resources available in North Carolina. MetOx recognized the benefits North Carolina’s academic institutions can deliver, thanks to our track record of successful partnerships between higher education and industry in North Carolina.”

Local leaders, including N.C. Representative Robert Reives and N.C. Senator Natalie Murdock, expressed enthusiasm for the project, acknowledging the collaborative efforts that helped secure MetOx’s investment in the area.

The initiative is supported by a coalition of organizations including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of N.C., and the North Carolina Community College System, among others.
