New Online Work Search Recording for Unemployment Claims in N.C.

The N.C. Division of Employment Security (DES) is rolling out a novel digital process for claimants in northeastern North Carolina to document their job search efforts. Beginning March 23, individuals submitting new claims from counties including Northampton, Hertford, and surrounding areas will utilize this online system.

This initiative is part of a broader, step-by-step deployment aligned with workforce prosperity zones across the state. Complete details can be found on the official website: des.nc.gov/work-search-activities.

DES Assistant Secretary M. Antwon Keith emphasized, “This new online record-keeping feature provides our customers with a more secure way to track their work search activities. This is another feather in our cap while we continue to streamline unemployment insurance processes in North Carolina.” The phased introduction aims to ensure minimal disruption to existing claims and day-to-day operations.

Under the new system, individuals filing a new unemployment claim must engage with three potential employers weekly and log these interactions in the MyNCUIBenefits portal prior to completing their weekly certification. In addition, claimants must register with NCWorks and remain available for work. Existing beneficiaries, however, can continue maintaining a paper record of their job search activities without needing to switch to the online format.

After documenting their job searches, claimants will be able to complete their weekly certifications, a requirement that must be fulfilled each week to guarantee the punctual distribution of unemployment benefits. The MyNCUIBenefits system will securely retain these records, offering download options for personal filing.

“This change is part of the division’s ongoing efforts to modernize the unemployment process, ensuring timely, accurate, and efficient payments to those who are entitled to receive them,” added Keith. The transition to an online recording system is designed to streamline the process, minimize errors, and enhance success for benefit applicants.

For assistance navigating this updated procedure, claimants can access a video guide and a FAQ document on the DES website: des.nc.gov/work-search-activities.
