Raleigh, N.C.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a new tool has emerged to provide valuable insights into the demographic characteristics of individuals applying for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits. The North Carolina Department of Commerce has introduced a data dashboard that compiles aggregate data, preserving individual privacy while offering a detailed look into the industries, occupations, and demographics of UI applicants.
This innovative North Carolina Unemployment Insurance Claims Dashboard is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders as they navigate hurricane recovery efforts. By offering data-driven insights, it helps in informed decision-making and planning.
Available online at analytics.nccommerce.com/NC-UI-Claims-Weekly, the dashboard provides weekly reporting on the number of initial unemployment claims and continued claims, also known as weekly certifications, under the state’s regular UI program. It also includes data on those qualifying for supplemental UI programs, such as the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA), which is active in 39 counties, as these claimants initially file a regular UI claim.
Beyond just numbers, the dashboard offers insights into the industry and occupation last held by the UI claimant. It also features a trend timeline, displaying how claimant numbers have shifted over recent weeks and months. The tool offers data specific to each of the state’s counties and the 20 regions defined by the Workforce Development Boards. For researchers interested in deeper analysis, data tables are downloadable.
This dashboard is a collaborative effort between the Commerce Department’s Labor & Economic Analysis Division (LEAD) and the Division of Employment Security (DES). While DES handles the management of the state’s unemployment insurance system, LEAD focuses on data collection, research, analysis, and publication of reports concerning the state’s economic and labor conditions.
The North Carolina Department of Commerce is dedicated to enhancing the economic well-being and quality of life for North Carolinians through various economic, community, and workforce development initiatives. Additional information about the Department’s projects and efforts can be found here.
