Opsun Corporation to Establish First U.S. Production Facility in North Carolina

In a significant boost for North Carolina’s clean energy landscape, Opsun Corporation plans to establish its inaugural United States manufacturing facility in High Point, Guilford County. The move will create 20 new jobs and involve a $9.3 million investment in the region.

Governor Josh Stein highlighted the strategic advantages that North Carolina offers to businesses. “This announcement is yet another illustration of how much companies want to do business in North Carolina,” he stated. “Our skilled workforce, commitment to sustainability, and convenient East Coast location continue to attract global manufacturers like Opsun Corporation. I am proud of North Carolina’s continued commitment to our clean energy economy, and I am excited to welcome Opsun to our state.”

With its headquarters in Quebec City, Opsun Corporation specializes in the design and production of aluminum structures for solar panels, serving diverse sectors such as commercial, industrial, and residential markets. The new facility will enhance operational efficiency, provide additional warehouse space, and significantly expand the company’s existing production capacity.

According to François Gilles-Gagnon, President of Opsun Corporation, “We’re thrilled to open our first US-base factory in such a booming economic and strategic center. This new facility will be a key to Opsun’s growth in the USA, and together with our North Carolina workforce and local suppliers, we will help drive the growth of solar installations across the state and throughout the United States. Opsun always sourced all components in North America and this new U.S. facility reinforces our commitment for domestically made, high performance solar mounting systems.”

The economic impact of Opsun’s decision is underscored by N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley, who noted the strategic benefits of the state’s location. “In addition to our manufacturing workforce of nearly 470,000 North Carolinians, our state is within a day’s drive of 170 million people,” Lilley said. “As the fourth largest state for installed solar energy capacity, Opsun is a great addition to North Carolina’s clean energy supply chain and we’re confident that they will be in great company in Guilford County.”

The new positions at Opsun will offer an average annual salary of $63,015, which surpasses Guilford County’s average of $60,195, leading to a significant annual payroll impact potentially exceeding $1.2 million for the area.

A $40,000 performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund will aid Opsun’s establishment in the state. This fund, aimed at attracting economic investment and job creation, stipulates that companies must achieve specific job creation and capital investment goals to receive the grant, with local government participation required.

N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger celebrated the announcement, stating, “These new jobs are a great addition to Guilford County and the entire state of North Carolina. The manufacturing workforce and accessible talent in the region are second to none, and we know Opsun will have a prosperous future here.”

Several partners are involved in this project, including the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, North Carolina General Assembly, North Carolina Community College System, NC Carolina Core, Guilford Technical Community College, GuilfordWorks, Guilford County, Guilford County Economic Development Alliance, City of High Point, and Greensboro Chamber.
