Republican Group Erases Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson from Website Following Controversial Posts

All mentions and images of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson have been removed from a Republican organization’s website that is dedicated to electing candidates to state legislatures. This action comes in the wake of a CNN report revealing that Robinson made several offensive remarks on an internet porn forum, including calling himself a “Black Nazi.”

Robinson is the Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina, facing Democratic candidate and current state Attorney General Josh Stein in the upcoming election.

Before the report surfaced on September 20, Robinson was listed as the chairman of the Right Leadership Network, an initiative that recruits and trains candidates for state legislative races. The organization is a subsidiary of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC). Following the report, Robinson’s name and photograph were removed from the Right Leadership Network’s website.

The RSLC has not provided any responses to inquiries regarding the reasons behind Robinson’s removal, his current status with the organization, or whether they repudiate his comments.

According to CNN, Robinson was active on the online forum “Nude Africa” between 2008 and 2012, where he posted offensive slurs aimed at Black people, Jews, and the LGBTQ community. He also shared experiences of spying on women in locker rooms.

The CNN report coincided with the Right Leadership Network’s announcement of its “spotlight candidates” for the 2024 election cycle. These candidates will receive digital campaign support from the RSLC. The decision on which candidates to highlight was influenced directly by the network’s chairs. A press release stated that the chosen candidates were picked for their diversity and because they “represent the values of their communities.”

Among the spotlight candidates are two from North Carolina: Stacie McGinn, running for state senate in district 42, and Ashlee Adams, running for state senate in district 18. Both were asked about their support for Robinson’s campaign and their reaction to the CNN report but did not provide any responses.

This incident is not Robinson’s first controversy. On September 16, HuffPost revealed a 2022 video in which Robinson stated young women do not need access to birth control, suggesting they should instead “get this under control,” while gesturing towards his crotch.

Robinson made a similar statement in 2019, saying, “Abortion in this country is not about protecting the lives of mothers. It is about killing the child because you weren’t responsible enough to keep your skirt down.”

Robinson has supported both a six-week and a total abortion ban. Despite these positions, he has admitted to paying for his wife to have an abortion in 1989. In a recent advertisement, Robinson claimed he would not seek stricter laws than North Carolina’s current 12-week abortion ban, which includes exceptions for rape and incest. Nonetheless, he later told a town hall audience he still supports a total ban.

In 2021, Robinson referred to gay and transgender individuals as “filth,” while also confessing on “Nude Africa” to enjoying pornography featuring transgender performers.

An Emerson College poll conducted in September showed Stein leading Robinson by eight percentage points.
