Wow Bao Sets the Stage for Expansion in Rutherford County, North Carolina
Rutherford County, North Carolina, is poised for economic growth as Wow Bao, an innovative Asian street food brand, announces plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Forest City. The expansion, expected to create 88 jobs and involve an investment of $6.45 million, marks Wow Bao’s first company-operated manufacturing site.
“North Carolina welcomes Wow Bao to our state where businesses find a strong infrastructure and ready workforce,” remarked Governor Josh Stein. Wow Bao, known for its distinctive menu featuring bao, potstickers, and soup dumplings, has expanded rapidly since its inception in 2003. The company’s new facility is designed to enhance production capabilities and tap into increasing demand.
Matt Fallon, CFO of Wow Bao, expressed enthusiasm: “Wow Bao is thrilled to bring our operations to Forest City. With a world-class workforce and vibrant food and beverage industry, it became clear that Forest City and the State of North Carolina were the perfect home for this exciting phase of Wow Bao’s expansion.” He further acknowledged the support from various North Carolina partners, including Governor Stein.
North Carolina’s robust manufacturing workforce and substantial food and beverage industry provide an ideal environment for businesses such as Wow Bao. N.C. Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley stated, “Our economic development teams at the state, regional, and local level will continue to provide strong support as the company expands their cutting-edge business.”
The Forest City facility will offer roles such as maintenance engineers, production supervisors, and sanitation associates. Salaries for these positions will average $49,648 annually, surpassing the average in Rutherford County, and potentially generating an annual payroll impact of over $4.3 million for the region.
To aid Wow Bao’s establishment in North Carolina, a performance-based grant of $180,000 from the One North Carolina Fund has been allocated. This fund assists local governments in attracting economic investments and job creation. Companies must meet specific job creation and investment targets before receiving grant payments, and local government matching grants are necessary for any award.
N.C. Senator Timothy D. Moffitt extended congratulations to the company, stating, “We look forward to the continued success and impact of their presence in North Carolina.” Meanwhile, N.C. Representative Jake Johnson highlighted the significant benefits for Forest City, emphasizing the job creation and strengthening of the local food production sector.
Key partners in this project include the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, North Carolina General Assembly, and others, working together to facilitate Wow Bao’s successful integration into the community.
