Shooting at Ramadan Event in West Philadelphia
In a tragic event on Wednesday afternoon, three people were shot at the end of a Ramadan gathering in West Philadelphia’s Parkside area, says police. The incident took place near 47th Street and Girard Avenue, attended by around 1,000 individuals.
According to Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel, five people, including a 15-year-old, are in custody. The minor was shot twice by the responding police and is currently at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Two more individuals, one aged 22, were also reported shot. Both the 15-year-old and the 22-year-old are stable, while the condition of the third person remains unknown. A child in the vicinity suffered a broken leg after being hit by a police car responding to the shooting. Bethel confirmed the recovery of five guns from the scene.
The FBI will assist the Philadelphia Police Department and other local partners in the ongoing investigation. ATF Philadelphia Field Division is also aiding at the shooting scene.
Sen. Bob Casey urged everyone to stay safe and follow law enforcement instructions, having been in touch with local officials about the shooting.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro expressed his sorrow for the Muslim community, noting that Eid should be a time of joy. He confirmed that the Pennsylvania State Police are in contact with Philadelphia police and have offered full support.
A spokesperson for the Philadelphia police advised parents seeking to reunite with their children to meet with officers at Sister Clara Muhammad School at 47th Street and Wyalusing Avenue.
