DJ Marty Geez, known as the Hands that Rocks the Tables, is eager to transform Nov. 5 into a festive occasion in Philadelphia. Partnering with nonpartisan DJs at the Polls, he aims to infuse music and excitement at polling stations nationwide on Election Day. He plans to adapt his music selection based on the crowd.
“I’ve got something for everyone, from Spanish hip-hop to R&B to Top 40,” says the Philadelphia native, whose favorite track is “Ain’t No Stopping Us Now,” by McFadden and Whitehead.
A Long History at the Turntables
DJ Geez began spinning in elementary school, inspired by his DJ dad and uncle. His career spans nationwide events, often collaborating with his uncle Tyraine Ragsdale, aka “Grand Hank,” who teaches STEM globally.
Alongside music, DJ Geez runs a t-shirt printing and photobooth business, with help from his five kids, aged 12 to 23.
“I love the people in my city,” he says. “When we get together, it is all fun and laughter…”
“We’ve got to get people out,” he emphasizes about Election Day. “Music unites everyone regardless of beliefs or background. A good song gets everyone involved.”
From Inaction to Action
DJ Geez joined DJs at the Polls over a decade ago, overcoming his initial political apathy. (The group remains nonpartisan.)
“We’ve got to start somewhere,” he insists. “Waiting isn’t the solution.”
He urges voters to be informed about local politics, not just the presidency. “Learn who’s in charge in your city and state, and hold them accountable,” he advises.
Philly voters can track where DJ Geez will perform on Nov. 5 by following him on Instagram.
