First-Time Voters Highlight Reproductive Rights at Kamala Harris’ Wilkes Barre Rally

Walking through the crowd at Kamala Harris’ rally in Wilkes Barre last Friday felt like being at a Taylor Swift concert.

Over 4,000 people attended the rally at Wilkes University, greeted with songs from Beyonce and Stevie Wonder.

Women in “Kamala” shirts and young college students from local universities made up much of the crowd.

Many young voters, especially women, traveled from Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg Universities to attend, highlighting their focus on reproductive rights.

A recent NBC News poll shows Gen Z voters favor Harris over Trump by 50% to 34%.

Janaya Yusko, celebrating her 18th birthday, attended with her mother and grandfather. She expressed her excitement about voting for the first time. “I am super happy that I’m able to pre-register so I can vote,” Yusko said. “My mom works in women’s health, so it’s always a blessing that I get the support that I need.”

Harris criticized Trump’s anti-abortion stance and vowed to pass legislation protecting reproductive rights if elected. “Let us agree, one does not have to abandon their faith to agree the government should not be telling her what to do,” Harris said.

Jaelynn Berry, a student at Marywood University, shared her excitement about voting in her first presidential election. “I think it’s super cool that there’s a woman of color running for president. As a woman of color, it’s super exciting to see someone represent where I came from.”
