Senator Dan Sullivan’s Attendance Record Raises Concerns Amidst Crucial Fisheries Hearings

Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican representing Alaska, is under scrutiny for his attendance record, particularly in relation to a Senate subcommittee that addresses issues vital to the state’s interests. Sullivan, who has been part of the Senate since 2015, is noted for being among the top 25% of senators with the highest absentee rates.

Since his tenure began, Sullivan has been a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW), which plays a significant role in shaping policies for Alaska’s fishing and water conservation sectors. The senator also participates in the EPW’s Fisheries, Water, and Wildlife Subcommittee, which is instrumental in crafting regulations for the state’s lucrative seafood industry, valued at approximately $5.3 billion annually.

Despite the importance of these sectors, between 2021 and 2026, Sullivan was absent from four out of eight subcommittee hearings. Notably, he missed the only hearing in 2026, a significant decline from his previous record of missing just one meeting from 2015 to 2020.

One missed hearing in 2023 focused on critical issues such as water affordability and infrastructure. A study by McGill University in 2021 highlighted the financial strain on rural Alaskans, who pay ten times more for water compared to residents in Anchorage. Water rates are projected to rise by up to 5% in the current year.

Sullivan’s attendance record is further examined by GovTrack, a nonpartisan organization that tracks congressional activities. According to their data, Sullivan is ranked as the 14th most absent senator from 2015 to 2025, sharing a similar record with Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell.

His absences have led to missed votes, including a significant 2025 vote on Howard Lutnik’s confirmation as Commerce Secretary and a 2024 vote for Michael Sfraga’s appointment as the first U.S. ambassador-at-large for Arctic Affairs, a role pivotal to Alaska’s Indigenous communities.

In a previous instance in 2018, Sullivan was absent for a cloture vote on a farm bill he had strongly advocated for, which later passed with provisions he supported, as announced in his press release titled “Sullivan Secures Important Provisions For Alaska Fishermen And Farmers In Farm Bill.”

As Sullivan campaigns for a third Senate term, he faces competition from Democratic candidate and former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola. Recent polling by Alaska Survey Research indicates Peltola holds a slight lead over Sullivan.
