Controversial Mayor Supports Jim Desmond’s Congressional Campaign
Republican candidate Jim Desmond is receiving notable support in his congressional bid from a controversial figure, Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander. Alexander has previously drawn criticism for her remarks comparing COVID mask mandates to racial segregation and for implying that the LGBTQ community includes pedophiles.
On July 12, Desmond expressed his gratitude to Mayor Alexander for her participation in a door-knocking event aimed at bolstering his campaign. In a Facebook post, he stated, “Your leadership and commitment to our community mean so much.”
Alexander, who was a member of the Temecula City Council in 2021, triggered widespread backlash when she likened her refusal to wear a mask during the pandemic to the iconic civil rights stand taken by Rosa Parks.
“[Parks] finally took a stand and moved to the front,” Alexander declared at a town council meeting. “I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus. I’m telling you, I feel like I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus!” Her comments rapidly gained attention, leading to public outrage and calls for her resignation, although she stood by her words.
In another controversial moment, Alexander reacted strongly against a ceremonial proclamation in support of LGBTQ pride month during a council meeting. She claimed that the inclusion of Minor Attracted Persons (MAPS) could be acknowledged under the LGBTQ pride flag, suggesting that the “+” in LGBTQ+ could cover individuals such as pedophiles.
It’s important to note that the mayor of Temecula is not directly elected by the public; rather, city council members choose one of their own to serve a one-year term. Alexander’s current term is set to conclude on January 1, 2027.
Jim Desmond is vying for a position in the state’s 48th District, with his main competition being San Diego City Council member Marni von Wilpert.
