Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced securing $34.2 million in federal funding to improve road safety across the state, with the funds derived from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. Milwaukee will receive the largest portion, $25 million, for enhancing safety on Center Street, including features like separated bike lanes and reduced speed limits. Additionally, Oshkosh will gain $8 million for a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Interstate 41, while Green Bay and La Crosse will get smaller amounts to develop safety action plans.

Wisconsin Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin announced on Sept. 5 her success in securing $34.2 million in federal funding to enhance road safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians across the state.

This funding comes from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, part of the $5 billion discretionary initiative created by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021. So far, $2.7 billion has been distributed for projects nationwide, as stated by the Department of Transportation.

The funds Baldwin secured will be allocated to Green Bay, La Crosse, Milwaukee, and Oshkosh.

Milwaukee will get the largest share, $25 million, to plan, design, and construct a 2-mile stretch of Center Street, a vital yet dangerous corridor.

“Safety interventions include fully separated bike lanes, bus bulb-outs, narrower travel lanes, reduced curb radii, curb extensions, leading pedestrian intervals, raised intersections, and speed limit reduction from 30 mph to 25 mph,” the Department of Transportation noted.

“Center Street is crucial for Milwaukee, connecting families to work and school,” Baldwin stated. “It’s also one of the most hazardous routes. This funding will implement essential safety upgrades, ensuring everyone can travel safely, whether by bus, car, bike, or on foot.”

Oshkosh will receive $8 million to construct a bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Interstate 41.

“The current area has roundabouts near the interstate with multiple serious and fatal injuries,” the Department of Transportation stated. “This project will enhance multimodal connectivity and safety by creating a crossing separate from vehicle traffic, accompanied by City-funded land acquisition and a shared-use path for western access to the new bridge.”

Green Bay and La Crosse will receive $916,000 and $280,000 respectively to develop a safety action plan to make their streets safer for all users.

“Our streets should ensure the safety of all community members, whether traveling by car, foot, or bike,” Baldwin said. “We must address the sometimes-deadly consequences of outdated infrastructure. I’m proud to secure this funding to equip our communities with the tools needed to make our streets safer.”
