The midblock crosswalk near Central Campus Transit Center on North University Avenue is crucial for over 1,500 pedestrians, including students, faculty, and staff, each peak hour. This heavy foot traffic often results in long vehicle queues, delaying both cars and campus buses.

To address these issues, a new traffic and pedestrian crossing signal has been installed. This system provides specific times for pedestrians to cross and traffic to move, enhancing safety and improving the corridor’s flow. During peak times, pedestrians receive 75% of the signal cycles, while vehicles get 25%. Off-peak times see an even 50/50 split.

Traffic analysis predicts this new signal will cut delay times for vehicles by up to 73%, creating a safer pedestrian environment. When the signal goes live in late August, compliance with walk signals and traffic rules will ensure the bus system runs more efficiently for all users.
