Michigan Lawyer Released After Detention by Israeli Authorities

Huwaida Arraf, a lawyer dedicated to human rights advocacy, has returned to Detroit following her recent detainment by Israeli forces. Arraf’s journey was part of a flotilla mission aimed at delivering humanitarian aid, particularly medical supplies, to the residents of the Gaza Strip.

During the operation last week, Israeli authorities boarded the vessel carrying Arraf and held her for five days. She alleges that she experienced physical assaults at the hands of the Israeli military during her detention.

Upon her arrival at Detroit Metro Airport, Arraf expressed dissatisfaction with the response from U.S. officials, stating, “The U.S. government did nothing for us,” while highlighting the financial support provided by the U.S. to Israel.

The Israeli government maintains a naval blockade on Gaza, citing the prevention of arms smuggling as its primary objective. Despite the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which stands amid accusations of violations from both parties, Arraf emphasizes the ongoing need to advocate for Palestinian support in Gaza.
