A New Legislative Push to Reshape ICE Funding and Oversight
In a significant move aimed at reshaping immigration enforcement, Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari from Arizona has introduced a set of legislative proposals. These bills are designed to significantly reduce the funding allocated to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and ensure greater accountability within detention facilities.
The legislative package, led by Ansari, includes the Drain ICE Act. This particular bill seeks to eliminate the $75 billion that was designated for ICE by a spending bill formulated by Republicans last year. Additionally, two other bills form part of this initiative. One mandates the Department of Homeland Security to provide detailed reports on the health and welfare of detainees, as well as to investigate any reported abuses. The final bill calls for a study by the Congressional Budget Office to evaluate the long-term economic implications of current immigration policies.
Adelita Grijalva, another Democrat from southern Arizona, has joined Ansari in co-sponsoring these bills. This legislative effort underscores a shared commitment to addressing issues related to immigration enforcement and detainee treatment.
During visits to the Eloy Detention Center, Ansari observed critical concerns regarding the well-being and health of detainees, which has fueled her advocacy for this legislation. She emphasizes that this legislative package represents a crucial step towards imposing necessary checks on ICE’s operations.
