County review application submitted, early June hearing likely
Following the mid-March proposal for a data center in Bonner, east of Missoula, concerns from neighbors arose. The planned data center, proposed for the former UFP Edge facility at Bonner Industrial Park, sparked worries of issues similar to a cryptocurrency mine that operated there from 2017 to 2020. This is the first proposal under the county’s regulations, adopted in 2021, that limit such facilities to industrial zones and require renewable energy use and electronic waste recycling.
Jennie Dixon, Missoula County planner, stated that compliance with these requirements is crucial. Krambu, an Idaho-based company, recently applied for county review of its proposed project. A hearing is planned for June 3 by the Missoula County Land Use Board to address the necessary exemption for its proximity to residential areas. However, this review will not cover all community concerns.
At a March 20 community meeting, Krambu’s CEO Steve Wood mentioned evaluating multiple sites for “AI factories,” including Bonner. The data center aims to be efficient and could reuse excess energy for community projects like a hydroponics farm. Wood emphasized local hiring for 15 initial permanent jobs, with potential growth.
Krambu requested 3 megawatts of power, drawing from external sources without impacting local ratepayers, according to Amber Orr, Krambu’s electrical engineer. This power need contrasts with the former Hyperblock facility’s 20 megawatts. Matt Afana of Polar Construction discussed the “closed loop” cooling system, requiring initial water from on-site wells. Compliance with noise and vibration limits will be essential under county review.
Missoula County Land Use Board will also assess access, traffic, utility impacts, and environmental aspects. Approval will require multiple county permits and proof of renewable energy usage. State permit requirements remain undetermined, but water testing is planned.
