The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor stands out as a cost-effective option for higher education in the state, thanks to substantial need-based aid and the Go Blue Guarantee. Known for its prestigious status, U-M offers affordability that rivals other Michigan public universities, often requiring lower out-of-pocket expenses for families.

Analyzing the net price, which is the average cost paid by families after grants and scholarships, U-M consistently ranks among the lowest or second-lowest priced institutions out of 15 public universities in Michigan for most residents.

U-M’s commitment to covering the full demonstrated need of in-state students ensures that quality education is accessible to Michigan families, regardless of their income level.

The Go Blue Guarantee is a standout financial aid program, offering free tuition to Michigan families with incomes up to $125,000 and assets not exceeding $125,000. While tuition is a significant expense, U-M’s need-based financial aid also helps with room and board for those with additional financial need.

Despite U-M Ann Arbor’s higher sticker price compared to other public universities in the state, its net price, after financial aid, is the lowest in Michigan for families earning below $48,000 annually.

For families with incomes ranging from $48,000 to $110,000, U-M Ann Arbor remains competitively priced, with an average annual net cost under $11,000. Only UM-Flint offers a slightly lower net price, under $10,000, within this income bracket.
