The University of Michigan shines as a top global research institution, securing the 51st spot overall in the QS World University Rankings 2027, released on June 18. Among 1,504 universities worldwide, U-M ranks in the top 3.4% globally and 15th among 184 U.S. institutions. This achievement places U-M as the third highest-ranked public university in the country, with UC Berkeley leading among public universities.

U-M excelled in academic excellence, graduate employability, and international research partnerships. It consistently demonstrates value through strong academic and employer reputations, supported by data on employment outcomes. The rankings consider nine factors: academic reputation (30%), employer reputation (15%), employability (5%), faculty-student ratio (10%), citations per faculty (20%), international faculty (5%), international students (5%), international research collaboration (5%), and sustainability (5%).
Globally, U-M’s impact is evident as a leading producer of Fulbright U.S. Scholars, part of the U.S. government’s top international academic exchange program. Since the Fulbright Program’s inception, U-M has earned over 600 scholar awards and more than 1,000 student awards, according to the International Institute Fellowships & Grants Office.

The university’s international appeal is highlighted by its enrollment of 2,658 international undergraduate students in fall 2025. Locally, U-M educates nearly 19,000 in-state undergraduates from all 83 Michigan counties, with over 60% graduating debt-free. Michigan residents with family incomes and assets of $125,000 or less may benefit from the Go Blue Guarantee, offering full tuition and mandatory fees coverage.
