Historic Solo Row: Kelsey Pfendler’s Record-Breaking Journey Across the Pacific

In an extraordinary feat of endurance and skill, Kelsey Pfendler has set a new benchmark in solo rowing. The Grand Canyon river guide recently achieved the fastest solo row from California to Hawaii, marking a significant milestone in maritime history.

On July 3, at just after 9 p.m. local time, Pfendler reached Ala Wai Harbor in Honolulu. Her remarkable journey, which began on May 21 from Monterey, California, spanned 43 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes.

Initially, her goal was to become the first American woman to complete the solo journey by rowboat. However, Pfendler surpassed all expectations by completing the 2,400-mile voyage over eight days faster than any male competitor and nearly twice as fast as the existing women’s record.

This achievement marks her third Pacific crossing in a small boat. Pfendler, who has a history with competitive rafting on the USA women’s team, has been guiding rafts on the Colorado River for eight years and is currently employed by Hatch River Expeditions.

Her record-setting journey was also a philanthropic endeavor, as it raised funds for the Whale Foundation. This Flagstaff-based nonprofit supports the health, well-being, and financial stability of Grand Canyon river guides.
