Arizona Charter School Leaders Face Indictment Over Misuse of Funds
Allegations of financial misconduct have surfaced in Arizona, where a former charter school leader, alongside others, stands accused of redirecting school funds towards personal luxuries. Kris Mayes, the state’s Attorney General, disclosed that indictments were filed against ex-Executive Director of Academy Del Sol, Jason Riegert, his spouse Staci Barton, and office manager Kimberly Richards.
The accusations point towards the misappropriation of over $100,000 from the Tucson K-8 charter schools, which are part of Academy Del Sol. This includes more than $25,000 derived from public education funds provided by the state, according to the indictment filed.
Central to the allegations is the claim that these funds were channeled through a shell company, Platinum Educational Solutions, purportedly owned by Riegert. This company was allegedly misrepresented as providing essential student support services.
Further charges suggest that the accused utilized a portion of these funds for private home improvements, deceptively billing the expenses as if the work was conducted on Academy Del Sol campuses. The indictment also details expenditures on personal indulgences including dining out, cosmetic procedures, a luxury vehicle, and travel to destinations like New York and Las Vegas.
