Special Election Scheduled in Arizona Following the Passing of Rep. Raúl Grijalva

In a significant political development, Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has announced plans to hold an election to fill the U.S. House seat in Congressional District 7. This decision follows the unfortunate passing of longtime Representative Raúl Grijalva.

The southern Arizona Democrat, who had served in Congress since 2002, passed away at the age of 77. His death on Thursday was attributed to complications arising from lung cancer treatment.

Governor Hobbs, in her official proclamation, outlined the timeline for the upcoming special election. A primary election is slated for July 15, with the general election scheduled for September 23.

Federal legislation grants states the autonomy to establish procedures for filling vacancies in the U.S. House. According to Arizona law, a special primary election must occur between 120 to 133 days following a vacancy if the next regular election is not within six months. The special general election is then held 70 to 80 days after the primary.

Representative Grijalva, who began his most recent term this past January, had previously announced that it would be his final term. The general election for his seat was initially planned for 2026.
