Arizona Residents to Witness Rare Celestial Event: A Total Lunar Eclipse

Skywatchers in Arizona are in for a rare treat tonight as a total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “blood moon,” graces the night sky. This will be the first and only occurrence of such an eclipse this year.

The celestial event will begin with the full moon appearing over the eastern horizon shortly after 6 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. As the night progresses, the eclipse is expected to start around 9 p.m., reaching its peak of totality around midnight, when the moon will take on a deep red hue for about an hour.

This spectacle is particularly special as it coincides with a micromoon, a phenomenon where the moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit, making it appear slightly smaller than usual. The Earth’s shadow will gradually recede from the moon, completing the eclipse by 3 a.m.

For those eager to catch a glimpse of the next total lunar eclipse in the region, they will have to wait until May of the following year.
