Historic Preservation Efforts in Arizona: May Hicks Curtis House and More
In a bid to preserve significant pieces of history, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has spotlighted the May Hicks Curtis House in Flagstaff as one of the nation’s most endangered historic sites. This designation underscores the urgent need for action to protect the property, which holds considerable historical value in Arizona’s heritage.
The house on South Leroux Street carries the legacy of May Hicks Curtis, affectionately dubbed the “‘Betsy Ross’ of Arizona.” In 1911, Curtis crafted the first state flag here, marking an important chapter in the state’s history. Situated just off the original Route 66 alignment, the house was built in 1913 and served as both a residence and a business locale for Curtis, who, along with her mother, operated nearby boarding houses. She continued to live and work in this house until her passing in 1970.
Recently, the May Hicks Curtis House faced the threat of demolition due to planned developments on its lot. In response, the City of Flagstaff stepped in to preserve this historical site, taking ownership and planning for its temporary relocation to a city-owned property. The city aims to find a permanent spot where the house can be restored and utilized for community purposes while honoring its historical significance.
The National Trust’s annual list aims to highlight “compelling, meaningful historic sites are at risk, whether from natural disasters, underutilization, neglect, or lack of awareness.” This year’s list also features the Mystery Castle in Phoenix, another Arizona landmark. Built in the 1930s by Boyce Luther Gulley for his daughter, this unique stone mansion was constructed without formal plans or permits and has since become a popular tourist attraction.
These efforts by the National Trust for Historic Preservation highlight the ongoing challenges and importance of maintaining and celebrating historical landmarks that contribute to the cultural fabric of communities.
