Arizona Bids Farewell to Long-serving Congressman Raúl Grijalva

In a poignant ceremony at St. Augustine Cathedral in Tucson, Arizona, friends, family, and colleagues gathered to honor the life and legacy of Congressman Raúl Grijalva. The 77-year-old, a stalwart advocate for environmental and tribal issues, passed away after a prolonged struggle with lung cancer.

His distinguished career spanned over two decades in Congress, where he served as a dedicated representative for southern Arizona. During the memorial, former Department of Interior Secretary Deb Haaland recalled her time working alongside Grijalva on the House Natural Resources Committee, emphasizing his steadfast commitment to environmental protection. Haaland remarked, “He was unwavering in his work to protect our air, land and water, and a powerful advocate for tribal communities everywhere.”

Grijalva’s contributions to Arizona and the nation were widely recognized, making him one of the state’s longest-serving Congressional representatives. His passion for safeguarding natural resources and his advocacy for tribal rights left a lasting impact on many.

Earlier in the week, Tucson residents and community leaders, including Pascua Yaqui Vice Chairman Peter Yucupicio, gathered for a vigil to pay tribute to Grijalva’s enduring legacy. Hundreds attended, reflecting the deep respect and admiration held for the late Congressman.

Throughout his career, Grijalva was a formidable voice in Congress, championing numerous causes and initiatives. His efforts included participating in a national monument designation ceremony near the Grand Canyon in 2023 and supporting climate-smart agriculture with a substantial USDA grant announced in 2022.

As Tucson and the broader Arizona community mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant, they also celebrate the profound mark Raúl Grijalva left on the state and its people. His legacy as a tireless advocate for environmental and indigenous rights will be remembered for years to come.
