Supreme Court Reviews Landmark Case on Birthright Citizenship
With the potential to reshape American citizenship laws, the Supreme Court is currently deliberating a case that could abolish birthright citizenship. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, along with other Democratic attorneys general, is actively defending the existing policy.
The controversy began when former President Donald Trump issued an executive order to terminate birthright citizenship. This directive has faced legal challenges, with every federal court previously ruling it unconstitutional before it reached the Supreme Court.
Now, the Supreme Court justices are tasked with deciding if they will maintain the decisions of the lower courts. Kris Mayes, in collaboration with 19 fellow attorneys general, emphasized in a joint statement that “presidential administrations from both parties have upheld the right to birthright citizenship ever since it was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court 127 years ago.”
The group argues that revoking this long-standing right would disrupt established law and tradition. The outcome of this case will be closely watched, as it holds significant implications for national citizenship policies.
