Funding Cut Leaves Arizona Cultural Programs in Limbo

In a surprising move, the Trump administration has redirected over $1 million previously allocated to the Arizona branch of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). This funding was initially intended to support various cultural and educational initiatives, including libraries, museums, and community programs.

The decision, communicated on April 2, stated that the funds would be reallocated to align with the President’s broader objectives. This action has prompted Arizona Humanities executive director Brenda Thomson to seek intervention from Attorney General Kris Mayes. Thomson argues that the Department of Government Efficiency lacks the legal power to withdraw funds that have already been designated by Congress.

“I’m also deeply disturbed that someone could pull funding in the middle of a program, and fiscal year, without understanding the loss to communities, to children and families, and to schools and teachers,” Thomson expressed her concerns.

Among those affected by the funding cut is researcher Elizabeth Schwall from Northern Arizona University. Schwall had secured a $6,000 summer stipend from NEH to examine climate change protests in Brazil. “Six thousand may not sound like a lot to many people, but it is a lot to me and my family. That could cover six months of childcare,” Schwall stated.

The NEH, founded in 1965, operates with a budget of $200 million, but recent developments have resulted in approximately 80% of its workforce being placed on administrative leave. Furthermore, following the President’s executive orders, the NEH announced last month that it would cease funding projects related to diversity, equity, inclusion, or accessibility.
