Georgia Gubernatorial Candidate Rick Jackson Supports Stricter Abortion Laws
Rick Jackson, a billionaire candidate for the governor of Georgia, has openly claimed credit for the state’s current abortion restrictions and expressed willingness to endorse even tighter regulations on the procedure.
During a meet-and-greet event on March 21 in Martinez, Jackson addressed a voter’s question regarding his stance on a “total abortion ban.”
“What we have in place, I’m not going to change it,” Jackson responded. “If anybody wants to do that, I would absolutely confirm it.”
Georgia’s current legislation bans abortion after six weeks of gestation, a time frame in which many women may not yet realize they are pregnant. Certain exceptions, such as cases of rape, incest, and medical emergencies, are included, but advocates argue that proving these circumstances is often challenging. In 2022, the ban was linked to the deaths of two women who were unable to receive necessary medical care for pregnancy complications.
Recently, a woman in Georgia faced murder charges after terminating her pregnancy past the six-week threshold using medication purchased online. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
Jackson, a significant contributor to political campaigns, proudly acknowledged his role in advancing the six-week abortion ban into law.
“I think we’ve made really good progress on this issue with the 6-weeks,” Jackson stated. “I’m real pleased that I was a part of that behind the scenes.”
However, public opinion might not align with Jackson’s views. A 2025 Change Research poll indicated that 61% of Georgia voters support the legality of abortion in all or most cases. Additionally, nearly 70% expressed support for legislation ensuring access to abortion care and birth control.
Jackson is facing Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger in the Republican primary. On the Democratic side, former Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms are among the contenders.
The primary election is set for May 19.
