Protests Erupt in Detroit Over Immigration Policies

In a powerful display of unity, hundreds of demonstrators gathered in southwest Detroit, chanting “We’re not afraid….we’re not afraid….” The protest was organized to oppose the Trump administration’s proposed deportation measures targeting immigrants residing in the U.S. without legal status.

President Donald Trump, during his campaign, committed to carrying out “mass deportations.” On Tuesday night, he reiterated this stance while addressing a joint session of Congress, stating, “The people elected me to do the job, and I am doing it.”

Nelson Garay from the People’s Assembly, the group behind the protest, commented on the atmosphere of fear pervading the community. “We have already been seeing the impact in the community just off of fear alone, from the rhetoric that the Trump regime has been putting out into the atmosphere,” he said.

The actual extent of any increase in arrests or deportations in southeast Michigan since Trump assumed office in January remains unclear. While Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intermittently shared statistics on social media, their website has not been updated with new data since September.
