Protests Erupt as President Trump Visits Macomb Community College
Amidst chants of “Donald Trump’s got to go,” a throng of protesters gathered outside Macomb Community College on Tuesday, voicing opposition to President Donald Trump’s visit. The demonstration, organized by local activist group Macomb Defenders Rising, drew thousands who were keen to show their discontent with the president’s policies.
Katrina Manetta, a member of the organizing group, emphasized the importance of public dissent. “We want to make sure that not only him but the public knows that there is dissent, there is opposition,” she stated, criticizing Trump’s actions as “anti-constitutional” since he began his second term.
The crowd held various signs, many advocating for immigrant rights and due process, although some contained language unsuitable for public media. The demonstration coincided with President Trump’s attempt to highlight his achievements after 100 days into his second term during his Michigan visit.
Michigan Democratic Party Chair Curtis Hertel expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s tenure, saying, “You look at a hundred days, I mean to me it’s a hundred days of broken promises.” During an earlier meeting, Hertel listened to locals affected by federal budget cuts, which have impacted children’s healthcare and veterans’ services.
Despite the criticism, Hertel acknowledged the need for the Democratic Party to offer clear alternatives to Republican policies. A recent national poll indicates that Congressional Republican leadership holds a 37% approval rating, while Congressional Democratic leaders have an even lower approval rating at 27%.
