The University of Michigan Advising Council has honored Stephanie Custer and Yili Lin from the College of Engineering for exceptional academic advising. The ACUM Outstanding Advising Award, established in 2022, acknowledges advisors from any Ann Arbor campus school or college. This year’s winners were chosen for promoting student learning and personal growth, aligning with the U-M Academic Advising & Coaching Framework. A total of 653 nominations were submitted for 285 advisors, with awards presented at the 2026 ACUM Advising Conference on May 6 and 7.
Stephanie Custer, an academic advisor in the College of Engineering, excels in a personalized, holistic advising approach. She is lauded for her advocacy, institutional knowledge, and genuine student investment. Her efforts extend beyond conventional advising, exemplified by her support for Michigan students abroad in France and outreach to students with academic challenges. As one student stated, “Stephanie is, without a doubt, the only reason I was able to finish my undergraduate degree in three years.”
Yili Lin, CSE undergraduate program advisor, is noted for her warm, proactive presence. Praised for her exceptional preparation and genuine concern, she recognizes students even after a year. One student felt a stronger sense of belonging in the College of Engineering community due to her recognition. Lin assists students in balancing athletics with rigorous curricula and supports them through family emergencies.

Ruth M. Sinclair Memorial Award:
Established in 1967, this award honors outstanding LSA general advisors. David Krstovich from Newnan Academic Advising Center is this year’s recipient. His warm approach and empowering support help students become independent decision-makers. One student noted, “Anytime we meet, David seems genuinely happy to help and truly cares about my wellbeing and future.”
Excellence in Departmental Advising Award:
Established in 1988, this award recognizes outstanding departmental advising. Darcy Brandel, Residential College lecturer, is celebrated for her enthusiasm and inclusivity. She helps students voice their dreams and concerns, providing support to achieve their aspirations. Brandel’s kindness and proactive approach significantly impact students’ success at the University of Michigan.

Unsung Champion Award:
Established in 2020, this award honors LSA individuals who positively influence students. This year’s award goes to Allison Earl, psychology associate professor. Her engaged mentorship fosters confidence and resilience, including students in advanced academic spaces. One nominator highlighted her consistent care and lasting impact, stating, “Her mentorship is not exceptional because of any single moment, but because of its consistency and care over time.”
