A Moose on Campus
Capital High School in Helena’s schedule was abruptly disrupted when a moose wandered onto campus Friday morning, leading to a temporary shelter-in-place order.
At around 9 a.m., Principal Brett Zanto informed students of the loose moose, which had been sighted on or near campus over the past three days, instructing them to stay in their classrooms.
“Fish and Game and law enforcement attempted to redirect it towards the fairgrounds a few days ago,” Zanto reported. “However, it returned today and resisted leaving.”
After a 15 to 20-minute shelter-in-place order advised by local law enforcement, the school day resumed as normal.
Zanto explained, “There were concerns about student safety during passing periods in case the agitated moose encountered a student.”
Eventually, local wildlife officials and police guided the moose off campus, into a marshy area on the northwest side of the school, towards Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds.
Greg Lemon, a spokesperson for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, stated, “It’s not surprising to see a moose in this area, which provides suitable moose habitat.”
