Over 80 individuals gathered at the state Capitol to unveil a plaque honoring Charles S. Johnson, a revered Montana journalist. Known as Chuck, Johnson’s journalism career spanned 45 years, prominently covering the 1972 Montana Constitutional Convention for the Associated Press. Even post-retirement in 2017, he remained active in the journalism community, notably serving on Montana Free Press’s board until his passing in 2023.

The commemorative plaque, backed by House Bill 855, highlights Johnson’s legacy in Montana’s public affairs and his mentoring of emerging journalists. It concludes with his famed statement: “It’s the public’s right to know, not the press’s right to know.”

Tim Fox, former Attorney General and Republican, hosted the event, representing the Montana Historical Society responsible for the plaque’s installation. Fox reflected on Johnson’s fair reporting during his time in politics. “I knew he was always going to be thorough and fair. And if I had made a mistake, I had better fess up in the first place, because he would find out sooner or later,” Fox said.

Longtime colleague Mike Dennison shared how Johnson’s principle of kindness influenced their newsroom, enhancing trust and effectiveness in difficult times. Jackie Yamanaka, former Yellowstone Public Radio news director, remembered Johnson as a “friend” and “mentor,” praising his humor and warmth even in serious settings.

Sen. Laura Smith, D-Helena, and Sen. Mary Ann Dunwell, D-Helena, supported the plaque legislation. Johnson’s wife, Pat Hunt, chose its Capitol location for its proximity to a former Associated Press office.
