Article Summary –
Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination for president during the final night of the Democratic National Convention, emphasizing her plans to rebuild the middle class, focus on economic growth, secure the US-Mexico border, and restore abortion rights. Harris contrasted her proposed policies, such as lowering healthcare and housing costs and protecting Social Security, with former President Donald Trump’s agenda, which she argued would benefit the wealthy and burden the middle class with a national sales tax. Highlighting her personal background and values instilled by her immigrant parents, Harris framed her candidacy as a fight for fundamental freedoms, including the right to vote and environmental protections.
Final Night of Democratic National Convention Boosts Harris’ Candidacy
Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention.
In her speech, Harris promised economic growth, middle-class support, additional security at the US-Mexico border, and restoration of nationwide abortion rights.
“In this election, many fundamental freedoms are at stake,” Harris said. “The freedom to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and live free from pollution. And the freedom to vote.”
The speech introduced Harris to the public. The vice president and former US senator began her campaign after President Joe Biden announced his retirement and endorsed her.
Harris shared her parents’ American dream story: Her mother, an Indian immigrant; her father, a Jamaican student. She emphasized policies for future generations to achieve the American dream.
“My mother worked long hours and leaned on a trusted circle to help raise us,” Harris said. “They instilled values of community, faith, and treating others with kindness, respect, and compassion.”
Her mother taught her “to never complain about injustice, but do something about it,” Harris said. “And never do anything half-assed.”
Harris contrasted herself with Donald Trump, who is running again after losing to Biden in 2020.
She highlighted differences on economic issues, vowing to lower healthcare, housing, and grocery costs while protecting Social Security and Medicare.
“A strong middle class is critical to America’s success. Building that middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency,” Harris said. “The middle class is where I come from.”
Trump, she said, would favor “himself and his billionaire friends” with tax breaks, adding $5 trillion to the national debt. “Instead of a Trump tax hike, we will pass a middle-class tax cut benefiting over 100 million Americans.”
Harris criticized Trump for “denigrating America” and “complaining about how terrible everything is.”
“My mother taught me: Never let anyone tell you who you are. Show them who you are,” Harris said. “America, let us show each other—and the world—who we are. We stand for freedom, opportunity, compassion, dignity, fairness, and endless possibilities.”
