Different Stances on Abortion Access Highlight Attorney General Debate
Reproductive rights dominated discussions in Thursday’s debate between Eugene DePasquale and Dave Sunday for Pennsylvania Attorney General.
DePasquale, the Democratic candidate and former Pennsylvania Auditor General, promised not to prosecute women for obtaining an abortion. Republican nominee and York County District Attorney, Sunday, pledged to uphold state abortion laws.
“I will never prosecute a woman or doctor for abortion,” DePasquale assured when questioned about actions under a potential abortion ban in Pennsylvania. “I will protect any woman coming here from other states.”
Sunday focused on enforcing existing laws, stating, “I will absolutely enforce and defend Pennsylvania’s abortion laws.”
DePasquale criticized Sunday’s stance, emphasizing that Republicans aim to enforce an abortion ban through initiatives like Project 2025 and a constitutional amendment that would bypass the governor’s veto power.
“Republican allies of Dave are pushing a constitutional amendment for a statewide ban,” DePasquale said. “I will never prosecute a woman for having an abortion.”
DePasquale also called out Sunday for being “funded by a billionaire backing a nationwide abortion ban.”
The Keystone reported that Sunday’s campaign received $5.5 million from a PAC funded by billionaire Jeffrey Yass, known for supporting anti-abortion candidates.
Yass, worth nearly $50 billion, has invested millions in campaigns of anti-abortion candidates nationwide.
