Newsom suggests Arizona doctors conduct abortions in California

Article Summary –

California Governor Gavin Newsom is planning emergency legislation to allow Arizona doctors to operate in California to provide abortions. This follows a recent ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court that the state must adhere to a law from the 1860s outlawing abortions except when the pregnant person’s life is in danger. The proposed legislation is being worked on in conjunction with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, both Democrats.

Gavin Newsom, California’s Governor, declared the state’s initiative on emergency legislation, allowing Arizona physicians to offer abortions in California. The comment follows the Arizona Supreme Court’s recent decision to enact a 19th-century law that forbids abortions, except when the pregnant individual’s life is at risk.

Newsom mentioned on MSNBC’s Inside with Jen Psaki that California is ready to help those in Arizona who are about to lose their abortion rights. Brandon Richards, Newsom’s spokesperson, confirmed via email that they are coordinating with Arizona officials on the proposal.

The Arizona Supreme Court has temporarily delayed the enforcement of their ruling, continuing to permit abortions. However, since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022 by the U.S Supreme Court, conservative states have limited or banned abortions, while others have worked to secure reproductive rights.

Newsom also released a new TV ad portraying a fictional scenario of women being stopped by police and asked to take a pregnancy test before crossing state lines. This comes as Alabama, Tennessee, and Oklahoma are considering laws to restrict minors from out-of-state abortions without parental consent.

Newsom’s ad emphasizes that these states have some of the most restrictive abortion laws, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Newsom urged on Twitter, “We cannot let them get away with this.”

A federal judge temporarily halted a similar law in Idaho last November, which aimed to prevent minors from receiving out-of-state abortions without parental consent.
