Patti Adair’s Congressional Bid: A Focus on Cost-Cutting Policies
In her campaign for Congress, Republican Patti Adair is prioritizing affordability and cost reductions, despite her support for a policy from the Trump administration that could remove up to 12 million individuals from Medicaid.
Adair aims to unseat Democratic Rep. Janelle Bynum in Oregon’s 5th District. Since 2019, Adair has been a commissioner for Deschutes County.
In June 2025, Adair’s X account featured posts from Republican Senators Markwayne Mullin and Rick Scott, who praised the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB), a significant tax law championed as a hallmark of President Donald Trump’s second term.
The legislation extends tax breaks for affluent individuals by significantly reducing federal expenditures. One major component is a $1 trillion cut to Medicaid, impacting low-income Americans, including 206,000 potential voters in Adair’s district.
Senator Scott’s post argued that Medicaid is plagued by fraud and that removing individuals from the program would resolve the issue. This claim runs counter to multiple studies indicating that most Medicaid fraud is perpetrated by health care providers and contractors, not the beneficiaries.
The Medicaid reductions are likely to harm rural hospitals and health care providers dependent on Medicaid reimbursements. In total, five facilities in Oregon’s 5th District stand to lose $55 million in revenue over the next decade, with nearly $23 million less for the St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
Additionally, OBBB caused the expiration of tax credits that previously reduced the cost of Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) plans. The House Joint Economic Committee estimates that 26,500 residents in Adair’s district could lose health coverage due to the combined impact of Medicaid cuts and the cessation of these credits.
In the past, Adair has advocated for the complete repeal of Obamacare, as noted in a 2017 X post where she wrote, “#repeal Obamacare. Now. Now. Now.”
The fiscal reductions in OBBB extend beyond healthcare, with the law also cutting $186 billion from SNAP, a program assisting more than 42 million Americans in purchasing groceries.
In contrast, Rep. Bynum opposed OBBB and emphasizes the importance of safeguarding Medicaid on her campaign platform.
“No person should be a medical emergency away from bankruptcy, but sadly that happens all too often in our country,” her campaign site asserts. “We need Congress to act—and that starts with protecting Medicare, expanding Medicaid, and lowering the cost of prescription drug prices.”
Adair’s political history includes longstanding support for Trump, having served as a delegate for his 2016 presidential campaign.
