Stacy Garrity’s Past Facebook Posts Stir Controversy Amid Gubernatorial Race

Newly discovered Facebook posts have surfaced, showing Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity expressing skepticism about the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election and lauding the rioters involved in the January 6 Capitol attack. These posts indicate that Garrity, now the presumptive Republican candidate for governor, may have been more supportive of the insurrection than previously thought.

The Capitol rioters, supporters of then-President Donald Trump, aimed to thwart the certification of the 2020 election results. Trump has repeatedly asserted, without evidence, that the election was stolen via widespread fraud. The rioters engaged in violent actions, including breaking windows, assaulting police, and leaving waste in the Capitol.

During these events, Garrity’s 2020 campaign’s official Facebook page posted a message condemning the violence and offering prayers for law enforcement. Although the post appeared to be in Garrity’s voice, metadata reveals it was crafted by a consultant.

In response to comments defending the rioters, Garrity used her personal Facebook account to describe them as “patriots” and mentioned her participation in a protest against election certification in Harrisburg. “I am proud of our Patriots,” Garrity commented. “Just want to make sure our patriots, law enforcement, and soldiers are safe. I went to Harrisburg yesterday and spoke at the vets rally against what happened in PA in November.”

When a commenter accused her of joining “the swamp” by not acknowledging the riot as a stand against communism, Garrity responded, “I am not going to become part of the swamp!” She reiterated her condemnation of the election’s integrity at the Harrisburg rally.

Garrity also aligned with a commenter attributing the riot to external influences.

This isn’t the first instance of Garrity defending Trump’s claims of electoral fraud. Following the 2020 election, her campaign participated in a Trump-led effort to disqualify over 2,000 Bucks County mail-in ballots. The Commonwealth Court and later the Pennsylvania Supreme Court both dismissed the effort.

In May 2022, Garrity shared a stage with Trump at a Greensburg rally, reiterating his claim that the 2020 election was not lost. “We know that he won,” she stated, crediting Trump for her victory as the first Republican treasurer in 20 years.

Trump’s fraud allegations often center on Philadelphia, where he claims illegal voting occurred. Garrity echoed these sentiments in an August 2024 radio interview, suggesting persistent electoral fraud in the city.

Despite these claims, multiple lawsuits and investigations have confirmed the 2020 election’s fairness, with President Joe Biden winning by over 80,000 votes in Pennsylvania.

On the first day of his second term, Trump pardoned all January 6 rioters and has since sought to have some of their records expunged. In January 2025, Garrity refrained from commenting on these pardons when speaking to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Garrity is set to challenge Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is seeking reelection.
