Settlement Reached Over Energy Issues in Tucson Mobile Home Park

Residents of a Tucson mobile home park will soon see improvements in their electricity supply following a settlement initiated by Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes. The settlement addresses concerns over unreliable power in the community, especially critical during Arizona’s scorching summer months.

The legal action, spearheaded by Mayes, a member of the Democratic party, resulted in $795,000 being allocated as restitution, civil penalties, and fees for violations of the state’s Consumer Fraud Act by Palo Verde Mobile Home Park.

Filed in September of last year, the complaint highlighted the park’s failure to provide adequate notice to tenants regarding frequent power outages and the delayed repairs of the electrical system. These issues were found to pose significant health risks to residents who depend on air conditioning for relief during extreme heat.

The judgment identified the root cause as an outdated and deteriorating electrical infrastructure within the park. Consequently, a substantial portion of the settlement funds will be dedicated to overhauling this system, with $130,000 specifically earmarked for compensating tenants.

In a statement, Mayes acknowledged the park owner’s willingness to collaborate with her office to implement effective solutions. “The Park owner took the initiative to cooperate with our office in implementing meaningful solutions for their tenants,” she commented.

Furthermore, the judgment mandates a freeze on rent and additional charges for residents for a period of two years. Mayes emphasized the importance of adequate living conditions, stating, “All tenants deserve habitable homes, including the ability to use electricity for critical systems like air conditioning.” She expressed appreciation for the park’s cooperation in addressing these vital concerns.
