Improvement in Fire Conditions Allows for Downgrade in Evacuation Status in Certain Arizona Communities
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has announced a change in the evacuation status for several Arizona communities due to the evolving conditions of the Pocket Fire. Kachina Village, Forest Highlands, and Pine Del have been moved from a “Set” pre-evacuation alert to a “Ready” status. This update follows the containment of 20% of the Pocket Fire.
According to information from the sheriff’s office, this decision was made in consultation with fire managers. However, Oak Creek Canyon remains on high alert under the “Set” status. The “Ready” status indicates that although there is an ongoing threat, residents should be prepared for potential evacuation should the situation worsen.
The sheriff’s office stated in a press release, “fire conditions improved and allowed for adjustment,” although residents should still expect to see smoke and fire activity for some time. Recent days have seen the Pocket Fire expand by thousands of acres, primarily due to burnout operations conducted by firefighting teams.
Officials noted on Wednesday that this marks the first time they have begun to contain the fire since its inception.
