Arizona Gubernatorial Race: Biggs Differentiates Himself from Lake Amid Campaign Comparisons
In the heated race for Arizona’s governor, GOP candidate Andy Biggs emphasizes his distinctions from former opponent Kari Lake, countering claims made by his opposition. As Biggs sets his sights on ousting incumbent Democrat Gov. Katie Hobbs this November, the narrative surrounding his candidacy becomes increasingly complex.
Hobbs’ reelection team, under the banner Copper State Victory, has drawn parallels between Biggs and Lake, branding Biggs as a “carbon copy” of Lake through a series of strategic press releases. It’s a comparison that Biggs firmly rejects. “I don’t think anybody that knows my personality would say that we’re the same people,” he stated.
The campaign has targeted both Biggs and Lake for their shared stances on controversial issues, such as advocating for a near total abortion ban and their alleged support of the January 6 Capitol insurrection. Biggs, who has supported abortion bans, was implicated by Stop the Steal organizer Ali Alexander in a since-deleted video for allegedly orchestrating the events of January 6, but he has denied these allegations.
Additionally, Biggs voted to overturn the results of Arizona’s 2020 election. However, when questioned, he has not confirmed whether he accepts President Joe Biden’s victory in 2020 or Hobbs’ win over Lake in 2022, both elections that former President Donald Trump and Lake have claimed were “stolen.”
Despite their differences, Biggs acknowledges a shared willingness with Lake to debate Hobbs, a challenge Hobbs has yet to accept. Reflecting on his past interactions with Hobbs, Biggs remarked, “I would love to debate Governor Hobbs. She was my minority leader when I was the Senate president, and I think that may be one reason she doesn’t want to debate me.”
As the campaign unfolds, Biggs continues to navigate these comparisons while reinforcing his political identity separate from Lake’s as he campaigns for the governor’s seat.
